Elon Activities for June 1, 2009 - May 31, 2010

Department activities

  1. Met with Dean Kiser on June 15 and got her input on holding Department external review. She indicated that she would leave the end of visit assessment up to the department to decide how to do it.
  2. Four new data lines were installed in Duke 304. Mike was very helpful and installed four instead of 2 with two in the front and two in the back. ^84 dollars.
  3. Duke 304 was painted on June 16th.
  4. Lynn indicated that her laptop was on the first list to be refreshed. June 16th.
  5. Lunch with Brian Hahn on June 23rd. Brian has just completed his second week as an intern with Fidelity. He is having a great time and is getting a chance to work on server side web development using WebSphere.
  6. Offered possible job opportunity to Evan. Evan pursued but problems with job description. Job description was pulled and re-advertised. See July 23rd below.
  7. Lab assistants are possible using IWSP funds. We can pick students. Need to go to financial planning to fill out a application, Gets approved by sponsor via email. 7.25 and hour. Tim Peeples indicated that we can move money into IWSP account from department budget.
  8. June 29, 2009 - Ordered 12 chairs for Carpenter. Joel selected a blueberry color as being the best for the atmosphere of the room.
  9. June 30, 2009 - Jessica Blouin offered an internship  at Pro Data Research for web programming. I contacted Chris Raymond to see if he was interested. Chris indicated that he would apply.
  10. July 6, 2009 - Updated listserv of cs-majors. Freshman are not on the list yet. The current number of majors is down.
  11. July 8, 2009 - Printer duplex unit installed. We can now print on both sides.
  12. July 8, 2009 - Test lab image for fall along with Duke. Joel has done an awesome job with the image.
  13. July 13, 2009 - Updated list of classes taught in computer labs and sent it to Robin.
  14. July 13, 2009 - Updated assessment templates to be consistent with latest ABET self study. Updated F09 assessments for fall 09 courses csc 330 and CSC 462 to use these new assessments.
  15. July 21, 2009 - Delos Elder offered an one week or so internship at Elder Hosiery Mills in Burlington.
  16. July 23, worked with Evan Morris to let him know that new job has been posted for web program at NIM
  17. July 24 - Met with Faith Shearer for one hour to better understand self study issues. Met with Paul Parsons for an hour to discuss timetable and his plans for the review. Two issues we discussed where to validate the no response for questions 1, 2, and  3 for operating principle 1.1 and 1.2. Paul indicated that kick off meeting will be August 31.
  18. July 24 - Signed Unit III received from Pam on July 23 and turned in to RaDonna.
  19. July 24 - Joel and Shannon confirmed slight schedule modification for Fall and Spring.
  20. July 24 - Sent Don an email to indicate that we have not yet had chance to confirm reservations.
  21. July 27 - Met with Nancy Midgette about NCAA self study
  22. July 27 - Met with Clay Hassard about self study.
  23. July 28 - Met with Gerry Francis about NCAA self study
  24. July 29 - Presented department to admissions. Admissions had about 10 individuals come to hear about the department of computing sciences. I spoke for approximately 1 hour. I talked a little about the emergence of mobile computing and cloud computing.
  25. July 29, 2009 - I attended the Sure presentation of Jaime Schatz. She did a great job on her 15 minute presentation to a diverse audience. Her talk was titled "FLOSSmole: Free libre or open source software development"
  26. July 30 - Met with Dave Blank about NCAA self study.
  27. July 30 - Ordered signs for two bulletin boards from Joeleen Robson. She will work on it over the next few days. The price is about 40 sollars and will come with velcro for mounting
  28. July 30 - Discussed IWSP again with Renee Thompson. She indicated once student goes to financial planning and qualifies that faculty will get an email to enter the number to charge to and a few other odds and ends. Other than that it is just signing the time sheet on line when submitted by 5th of each month.
  29. July 30 - Chairs were delivered.
  30. July 30 - Checked Duke image with Joel. Three small issues were discovered. He did a most superb job with the new image.
  31. August 23 - Department held annual retreat for pre-assessment and to review objectives and goals for the year. Minutes are posted on web.
  32. August 27 - Department had 2 hour meeting to discuss vision. We used the opening address (9 Google IO YouTube Videos) for Google IO to look at the Web Programming Model.
  33. August 27 - Barbara has automated the updating of department web page from eNet feed. If faculty submit a eNet from Computing Sciences then it will automatically appear.
  34. August 24 - Joel posted the four new department signs over bulletin boards, in Carpenter Lab and in department suite. Trying to brand the tag Software runs the world.
  35. August 31 - Moved 1,100 dollars to IWSP wages to support three Teacher assistant positions for fall semester. Andrea Edwards said that be requesting temporary that the money would not automatically be in IWSP next year.
  36. Sept. 3, 09 - Worked with Joel as he resolved issue to insure all four dataports were live and not daisy changed to single instructor port in Duke 304.
  37. Sept. 3, 09 - Worked with Media service to have new instructor workstation in Duke 303 be programmed to have a screen up and down button as requested by Megan.
  38. Sept. 3, 09 - Joel and I met with Jeff Clark who is on general studies committee to determine time frame and plan of action to get our comments heard. Plan is for Joel to oversee the writing of letter voicing department concerns to send to Tom Mould.
  39. Sept. 8, 09 - Katherine Vogt signed up for 1 hour 499 with Duke Hutchings on Exploring Issues in HCI.
    Jamie Schatz is doing 2 hours of 499 with Megan
    Jonathan Citty is doing 1 hour of 499 with Duke
  40. Sept. 8, 09 - Jamie signed up for 2 hours with Megan Squire on Flossmole: free, libre or open source software.
  41. Sept. 8, 09 - Lynn will teach CIS 211 this summer. Michele did it the previous two years. The department has agreed that the amount of work to put together a summer course deserves 2 years teaching it to leverage the work.
  42. Sept 18, 09 - Duke had a 3 class session on IRISE in Carpenter. He had the students design IPHONE apps GUIs. Very cool.
  43. Sept 18, 09 - ACM hosting a game night.
  44. Sept 18, 09 - John  Wohlgemuth (2000 Elon CS grad) stopped by. He is working for Microsoft since 2004. He is involved with the Windows 7 kernal development.
  45. Sept 18, 09 - Mark Sauls sent a nice email. He has a job with GE Aviation.
  46. Sept. 18, 09 - Game night by ACM student group over 70 attendees.
  47. Sept 21, 09 - Visited IBM WebSphere Application Center and met Erik Burckart. He is a a lead architect on th WebSphere Application Server product. He advised us to focus first priority onjdbc,  servlets, jsp, jpa and web services (rs and ws with jaxb) along with javascript. 2nd priority would be ejb. He was a very helpful expert. He suggested to use eclipse with WTP and the websphere community edition as it would be lighter weight and an easier install for students. He recommended only using a war file.  He commended apache wink for jax-rs. He also recommended axis 2.0. He suggested staying at annotation level. Erik graciously spent 90 minutes with me and offered to come out to Elon to help out for a lab session if needed. We discussed books. He liked the free book Mastering EJB 3.0 which is free. He particularly liked the web site, TheServerSide.com
  48. Sept. 24, 09 - Jane Mehringer visited the senior seminar class to discuss opportunities at Credit Suisse. She had two 2007 Elon Technical Analysts with her. These were Kristin and James. The session lasted for an hour and 5 CSC students and 3 CIS students attended. From CIS, Jamie Shatz, Robert Bush and Jonathan Citty were present.  Jane indicated 97% retention rate on technical analyst program. One person left as spouse was relocated to Georgia. She also indicated a 100% acceptance rate.
  49. Sept. 24, 09 - The student chapter of the ACM hosted Credit Suisse from 4:15-5:30. Jane had Kristin and James along with Roger, Mike and Sarah. 18 students were in attendance. Credit Suisse did  a great job at discussing IT and its importance within Credit Suisse. Jane indicated that she will be back on campus to discuss applying for summer internships in January. Credit Suisse supplied the refreshments. At the ACM meeting, I saw Chris Raymond, Nestor Walker, Jonathan Citty, Tess Stamper, Chip Methvin, Brian Hahn, Amanda Bienz, Tyler Anderson, Dan Cresse, Steven Norris, Jamie Allison, Keith Perri, Yakira Bristol, Katlyn Murphy, Adam Price.
  50. Sept. 26, 2009 - Attended parents weekend. I met 3 parents of students. 2 set of parents for CSC 330 and 1 parent for CSC 462.
  51. Sept. 28 - Requested extended building hour access to students that are majors in CSC and CIS. Need to do this during planning week in future.
  52. Sept. 28 - Requested recruitment letters from Bernice for students that did well in CSC 130 to consider CSC 230 in Spring. Bernice created letters. I signed them and they were mailed on Oct. 1, 2009 to 45 students.
  53. Sept.30 - Oct. 2, 2009 - Don Bailes conducted an external review of the department, Don is a former ABET president and is an expert on accreditation. During his visit he met the associate provost, associate dean, director of institutional advancement, registrar, career center, advising center, library, and VP of IT along with individual sessions with each department faculty member and a one hour session with students.
  54. Eight students (4 from CSC, 1 minor in CSC and 3 majors in CIS) applied for the Credit Suisse technical analyst positions. All eight were accepted for interviews on October 8th at Elon.
  55. October 1, 2009 - Attended Business School monthly meeting where they discussed upcoming curriculum to be discussed at curriculum committee meeting. The good news brought up at the meeting is the Business School will add a new position in MIS this year.
  56. October 1, 2009 - Don Bailes sent us a link to the new CIS 2009 Curricula.
  57. October 5, 2009 - Presented department to interested high school senior Steve Keningham
  58. October 12, 2009 - Presented department to interested high school senior from Charlotte, Ed Shea.
  59. Oct. 14, 2009 - Found out from John David Parsons that he got the Fleet Feet consulting work. He has the exciting challenge to create a web based system for  logging orders for 96 stores. He indicated that he is using LINQ and C#.
  60. Oct. 13, 2009 - Duke is representing department in SAS discussions with Alex.
  61. Oct. 21, 2009 - Approved (strongly endorsed) summer  2010 research fellowship request along with spring 2011 sabbatical.
  62.  Oct. 28, 2009 - Credit Suisse indicated they are inviting 5 CSC, CIS majors for the super day interview this Friday (Oct. 30, 2009) and next Tuesday (Nov. 3). Individuals Brian, Jaime, Robert, Jonathan, Stu.
  63. Oct. 24-27, 2009 - Part of 3 person ABET team to evaluate Pennsylvania University for accreditation. I went with Stephen Hedetniemi and Mudasser Wyne. It was a great vist. The school was superb and I learned a lot from the team.
  64. Oct. 31, 2009 - Presented Exploring Majors at the Fall Open House sponsored by Admissions. The turn out was very small. We had 2 parents and 1 student attend. This was the lowest turnout in 9 years. It could have been the weather (rain). It could have been the day (Halloween).
  65. Curriculum: Joel and I met on Nov. 2, 2009 to discuss ideas and the need to come up with ideas for being a program of distinction with measurable objectives.
  66. Jonathan Citty and Robert Bush received and accepted offers from Credit Suisse. They interviewed Friday October 30 and received offers three days later. Wow!
  67. Duke went to SAP conference at ETSU on Oct. 30 to find out more for the department. The department reimbursed him for trip expenses of 283.21
  68. Supported 150 dollars of purchases for 4 gig flash memory sticks for CIS 211 for class demonstration by Katherine Vogt.
  69. Attended Mark White presentation on Thursday Nov. 12, 2009. He is CFO of SAP North America.
  70. Jane Mehringer indicated 6 CS students hired for technical analyst program. They are: Robert Bush, Jonathan City, Stu Gowdy, Brian Hahn, Kaitlyn Murphy, Jamie Schatz
  71. Nov. 21, 2009 - Presented Fall Open House for Exploring Majors for Admissions. 4 students (2 male and 2 female) attended.
  72. Nov. 26, 2009 - Jenn Batchelor received/accepted a job at SAS upon graduation in May.
  73. Dec. 3, 2009 - Participated as professor representative in an admissions monthly on line chat from 8-9:30PM (elonchat).
  74. Dec. 3, 2009 - Attended poster presentation by Kate Vogt. She is working with Duke Hutchings on presenting degree audit data in a different manner for her fellows research.
  75. Dec. 3, 2009 - Attended holiday reception held by Dean Kiser for chairs and program coordinators.
  76. Dec. 4, 2009 - At faculty meeting gave overview of Governance and Compliance subcommittee.
  77. Dec. 17, 2009 - Submitted recommendation letter to Wake Forest for Tess Stamper.
  78. Jan. 4, 2010 - Attended half day chair workshop on 360 Peer evaluation.
  79. Jan. 15, 2010 - Submitted paper with Joel to the 48th ACM Southeast Conference. The paper was titled "Teaching Web Programming Using the Google Cloud". The author notification date is Feb. 26, 2010. We are registration 64 - (mascot + 9)
  80. Jan. 26, 2010 - Joel and I have ordered Google Nexus phones for his class. Joel anticipates ordering 2 more IONs.
  81. Jan. 26, 2010 - Christopher Rowe stopped by to see how he can support our classes. Lynn and Christophor will work together on a lab for cisco switches. This is a great start and could blossom into other areas. Christopher is an adjunct at Guildford.
  82. Jan. 26, 2010 - Submitted letters of recommendation to UNCG and NCState for Tess. UNC Chapel Hill link was done.
  83. Jan 27, 2010 - Flattered to be offered chance to be nominated as ABET commissioner. I asked if nomination could be delayed one year. Harold Grossman indicated yes. I hope to do it next year.
  84. Jan 28, 2010 - Held semi annual assessment with department from 11-3PM. Great meeting.
  85. Jan 30, 2010 - Wrote recommendation letter for Yakira to Georgia Tech.
  86. Jan 29, 2010 - Provided recommendation (phone) to Garmond for MHolt.
  87. Feb. 1, 2010 - Updated CIS and CSC senior surveys in Blackboard to new program outcomes and distributed to all seniors.
  88. Feb. 3, 2010 - Woody Pelton requested if Michele was able to teach winter term 2011 study abroad with Jim Brown. Michele and Department approved request. Waiting on final confirmation from Woody.
  89. Feb. 3, 2010 - Updated cs-majors listserve with 17 additions
  90. Feb. 4, 2010 - Jonathan Citty signed up for 1 hour of 499 research with Duke. "Assessing a Visual Password System for Mobile Devices.
  91. Feb. 4, 2010 - Attended Dean candidate interview with department chairs 9-10am in Lindner 206. Candidate was superb.
  92. Feb. 9 and Feb. 12 - Met two Dean candidates. Larry with department chairs and Karen with Professors.
  93. Feb. 10, 2010 - Hosted Credit Suisse, Jane visited CIS 301 and CSC 335. Jane had 9 Credit Suisse personnel with her Roger, Ellis (DBA), Bryan, Kristin, Mike, Liz, Sarah and Stephanie.
  94. Feb. 11, 2010 - Had NCAA subcommittee meeting. Dean Parsons attended and Mary Wise gave us access to draft document.
  95. Feb. 12, 2010 - Turned in preregistration guide for freshman to Troy. CIS faculty did a great job editing CIS description. I updated CSC description at the last moment to market Android and Cloud computing.
  96. Feb. 15, 2010 - Met with Dean Kiser and Tim Peeples to discuss Unit III. Tim indicated that limited term would be funded and Duke 303 would be a go for 2011-2012.
  97. Lynn submitted work agreement for Keith for CIS 345.
  98. Attended Joel's Mobile class on Feb. 16, 2010. He had 19 great Mobile phone presentations. Some were: iLingual, Shop Savvy, Hitchcock, SkyMap, Google Googles, XBMC, JellyCar, BUMP, Audalyzer, Sky Siege,  Mobile Air Mouse, cab4me, CubeRunner, Evernote,  Pick Up Lines, Wave Secure, Grocery IQ, NASA, Layar Reality Browser, Labyrinth2.
  99. Feb. 21, 2010 had breakfast and attended research presentation of Sean Hanson for faculty position in MIS.
  100. Feb. 18, 2010  recommended Keith Perri for internship with gps-magazine after I received call from Lee their owner.
  101. Feb. 24, 2010 - Met with Jane Mehringer and Roger of Credit Suisse to discuss CS students applying for internships at Credit Suisse. The department had over 10 students apply for the summer internships.
  102. Michele Kleckner volunteered to be representative from Computer Science.
  103. Feb. 26, 2010 - Tess informed me that she has received full scholarship and stipend to WFU
  104. March 1, 2010 - Tyler A.  informed me that Icon Factory will make him an internship offer
  105. March 2, 2010 Interviewed Anil Guring for MIS position. Had breakfast and attended research presentation.
  106. March 2, 2010 wrote letters of recommendation for Amanda B.  for REUs
  107. March 2, 2010 followed up with email to Chris F and Dean on 3 year refresh status for Carpenter.
  108. March 1, 2010 Joel and my paper was accepted for ACMSE conference in Mississippi
  109. March 3, 2010 Seven students have been invited for final round of interviews for summer internships at Credit Suisse.
  110. March 3, 2010 Requested recruitment letters for CSC 130 B or better for fall
  111. March 5, 2010 ACM student chapter held a game night. Over 50 attended.
  112. March 6, 2010 Fellows Weekend on Saturday. I interviewed two outstanding students for the honors program.
  113. March 9, 2010 Breakfast and research presentation with third candidate for MIS position (Haya Ajjan). Previously met Sean Hansen and Anil Gurung.
  114. March 6, 2010 Lynn Heinrichs received Distinguished Service Award to SWDSI. I sent it to Eric Townsend and hopefully he will publish.

August 31, 2009 - Had first meeting of subcommittee on Governance and Compliance from 11:05-11:30 in Duke 203. The entire subcommittee attended. Ken, Clay, Tara, Khirey, Mike, Ron, Terry, Karen, Elizabeth and myself.
