=======================

These minutes were created by Barbara from her leading the course release discussion at the department retreat on August 17, 2004.

Update: On August 20, in blue I added comments received from the meeting held by Steven House, Nancy Midgette and Gerry Francis with the department chairs.

Here is a summary of what you indicated on the reassigned time sheet that went around in today's meeting:

Fall 05 or whenever: Michelle (teaching/service project)

Fall 06: Lynn (teaching) and Megan (scholarship)

Whenever:
Shannon (scholarship/teaching)
Dave (scholarship)

Joel: In his absence, Dave suggested he would probably value the time in 05-06.

Listed below are things I remember that we want Dave to ask about at chairs' meeting on Friday. If I misstated or you have other questions, let Dave know before Friday.

What does balance between scholarship, service, and teaching mean? That we must have balance across people or balance within a person? In other words, do we need to equally distribute our reassigned times between the three areas?

The balance is by department and does not need to be balanced on a year by year basis. The idea is that over time the department will have requests from all categories.

If we must have balance across three areas and if it's for things we would do anyway and not for extra work, what difference does it make which one we put down since we are going to do all three anyway?

Does Global count as a reason for reassigned time - to me, yes - it's both teaching and service to institution/general studies program.

Global by itself is not enough as teaching global studies is expected of all faculty.  However, the major point identified here is that you can include more than one area for the reason for the course release. For example,  a valid request for a course release would be two GST 110 courses plus some other activities such as Elon 101 commitment and research work in CIS.

Steven made a point that an easy way to help with the course release request is to look at your unit 1 development plan from the previous year.

Additional comments:

The plan is to fund at least at the 2006-2007 level continuously into the future. This is not a two year and out program.

The course releases will NOT raise the bar.

If course releases are not used in a year then they are lost. They do not rollover.

The faculty request for course release is due to department chairs by September 20. Most chairs expressed a similar plan to the one we developed on Wednesday. The department decides on who will receive the   releases  for next year and then they expect those faculty to develop a well written course release proposal to the chair.

If we receive 4.5 course releases per year then a rounding will take place. One year it will round down and the next year it will round up.
